Allianz and Enaleia Join Forces to Tackle Waterway Pollution and Promote Circular Economy in Egypt
Cairo, Egypt, December 7, 2025:
Allianz, a leading insurance provider, has partnered with Enaleia International, a social enterprise addressing plastic pollution and overfishing, in a three-year initiative starting December 2025. The initiative, named “Sustainable Waters from Med to Nile,” adopts a structured approach based on three pillars: Community Education and Engagement, Large-Scale Clean-Ups, and Circular-Economy Integration. Together, these pillars aim to support Egypt’s reduction of its plastic footprint and protect the health of the country’s waterways, from the Mediterranean coast to the Nile River.
The signing ceremony was attended by Charles Tawdros, CEO of Allianz Egypt and MD of Allianz Life Assurance Company in Egypt, and Ahmed Lotfy, Managing Director of Allianz Insurance Company – Egypt, Lefteris Arapakis, Co-Founder & Director at Enaleia, and Nepheli Galgos, International Project Manager at Enaleia, along with senior executives from both organizations.
Through Enaleia’s expertise and in partnership with Allianz, the three-pillared initiative is centred on “Community Education and Engagement”, by training and incentivizing coastal and riverine fishing communities, running awareness campaigns, and creating volunteer opportunities for Allianz Egypt employees to support local outreach. It also conducts “Large-Scale Clean-Ups” through fishing-for-litter operations and targeted ports, coastlines, and riverbanks collection activities that scale the removal of debris. Finally, the initiative includes a “Circular-Economy Integration” approach, channelling all collected plastic and used fishing gear to certified recycling and upcycling partners, ensuring material traceability and conversion into secondary raw materials and sustainable products.
Driven by a shared commitment between Allianz and Enaleia to create a positive impact, this partnership directly supports Egypt’s national environmental agenda, particularly efforts to protect water ecosystems and reduce pollution. It also contributes to several UN Sustainable Development Goals, primarily SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), while reinforcing SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through cross-sector collaboration.
Worth mentioning, Allianz Egypt has been recognized through prestigious awards, including Best CSR Insurance Company – 2023 by the International Finance Awards (IFA) and Most Socially Responsible Insurance Company in Egypt – 2024 by The Global Economics Awards, highlighting its ongoing impact and efforts to create real value in the communities where it operates.

About Enaleia
Enaleia is a social enterprise with a mission to restore the marine ecosystem. Through its innovative programs, Enaleia empowers more than 6,000 fishers in the Mediterranean to both remove plastic waste from the sea and prevent further marine pollution at its source.
To date, Enaleia has collected over2,000,000 kilograms of plastic from the Mediterranean Sea, equivalent to removing 5 full truckloads of plastic every single day. Impressively, more than 58% of this recovered material is reintegrated into the circular economy, transforming marine pollution into valuable, reusable resources, such as kayaks and furniture.

Its work has also been featured in major international media, including The Washington Post, The Guardian, BBC, and CNN.
Starting with the kids … Allianz took recycling activities to a new level in Sahel this summer. We started by teaching our little ones how to be sustainable by telling them stories and making them use empty plastic bottles to make their own turtle which they enjoyed and learned a lot from.
Allianz recycling machine
Also, we placed Allianz plastic recycling machine, where people simply can insert used plastic bottles or cans and the machine recycles them up. In return, it offers people a gift from Allianz.
